Toothbrushing – Brushing Technique
- Brush with a small, vigorous circular action or use an electric toothbrush.
- Try to brush in an ordered sequence, starting with the inside surfaces first, as they are the most awkward to reach.
- Move along one tooth at a time with the brush head angled 45 degrees towards the gum line to ensure nowhere is missed.
- Be careful to brush right down to the gum level, as this is where most plaque builds up.
Flossing Technique
- Step 1 – Use a ruler-length piece of floss and wind floss around your middle fingers to keep it taut. Then, place the floss over the tips of your first fingers to reach your back teeth.
- Step 2 – Floss your top front teeth by placing it over the tip of one finger and one thumb.
- Step 3 – Ease the floss between your teeth with a gentle sawing action and then clean with an up and down movement, ensuring you curve the floss around each side of each tooth and place the floss slightly below the gum line.
Mouthwashes
Few people have such a thorough brushing and flossing routine that they would not benefit from the use of mouthwash. An excellent daily mouthwash can help eliminate food debris and bacteria that have not all been removed by brushing and flossing and can be very effective at combating bad breath.
Other mouthwashes are particularly helpful in preventing decay in those prone to recurrent problems or in treating acute gum infections when necessary.
Tongue Cleaning
Tongue cleaning is an important part of your oral hygiene and fresh breath program. The back of the tongue is a reservoir for organisms that cause gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath. A tongue cleaner can be used to gently sweep this substance away to reduce the bacteria in your mouth and freshen your breath, alongside a Retardex oral spray and mouth rinse.
Products
We stock an extensive range of dental care products. Each item has been carefully rated, and we will be happy to advise you on the best product. Here is a small selection.
Hygienist Appointment
We offer a number of different hygiene fresh breath packages. With the best will in the world, it is still difficult to eradicate the plaque and completely prevent the build-up of tartar. We strongly recommend visiting the hygienist for a professional dental cleaning session every 3 to 6 months. If you have had porcelain veneers or crown and bridgework, you will need to see our hygienist at least twice a year to extend your guarantee to up to 5 years.
The combination of food and bacteria in your mouth can cause decay, gum disease and bad breath.
It would be a great pity to suffer gum recession or to lose teeth through gum disease because of long-term neglect of oral hygiene. It would equally be a shame to compromise the effect of an attractive smile with bad breath, even in the short term.
Follow these daily steps to maintain a healthy mouth and fresh breath and to maximise the longevity of your smile.
